Chapter 18

The whole ride home, Mac didn’t say a word. The mood in the SUV felt uncomfortable and unfamiliar. She tried to start a conversation a number of times, but he made it clear he wanted to drive in silence, playing the music just a little louder. During the ferry ride, he simply announced he had some phone calls to make and walked off before she could form a follow-up question, so Marissa leaned against the bow, watching the waves as they rode back.

As they got off the ferry, Mac headed straight for the precinct and called Ronnie to have her bring Kate outside. Once she got in the car, the whole mood shifted. Mac was smiling again and feeling significantly chattier than he had on the ride back from Seattle. For the first time since she had come to stay with them, Kate was also feeling chatty. She was relaxed. Unfortunately, Marissa’s mind was too cloudy to appreciate it.

Once they were inside, Marissa was surprised to hear Kate offer to help Mac with dinner. She hadn’t really opened up, but she seemed like she was growing more comfortable. They both clearly had things handled with dinner, so after a few minutes of watching them, she quietly snuck upstairs to shower.

Seeing Jared had fucked with her brain in more ways than one. Knowing he knew the truth about everything didn’t change anything. No, that wasn’t exactly true either, she realized as she stared at her reflection. There was a sense of relief. For one, she didn’t have to lie to him anymore. More than that, though, she was sure she had made the right decision in the first place. Had he known from the beginning, he would have gotten himself killed. He may have claimed he wasn’t happy, but she refused to believe it. Maybe it was denial on her part. She started the shower and stripped her clothes off, still unable to look at her bare reflection. The sight of the damage she had caused to herself was still a lot to comprehend. Shattering in its own way. She turned off the bathroom’s main light, letting the soft light from her bedroom fill the room.

Stepping under the hot water, she let it pour over her face, closing her eyes tight. In her way, despite everything going on, or maybe in spite of everything, she was happy too. She felt supported, seen, and most importantly, safe. She felt loved. But with all that came another rush of emotions that caused her to start spiraling when she heard a gentle knock at the door.

“Riss?” She heard Mac’s voice before she saw him.

“Yeah?” Marissa answered him as he came into view, though he was more like a shadow on the other side of the shower door.

“I—” In the past four months she had spent with him, she couldn’t remember the last time he was at a loss for words. This was not a good sign. “We need to talk.”

Nope. Not a good sign at all.
